Bradford Butler’s paintings exist in the ambiguity of representational and abstract images. In a world that is flooded with over produced advertisements, commercials, and consumerism, paintings require the patient arrest of our attention. This series of paintings are heavily influenced by the work of Cy Twombly. Instead of using text from classical literature, mythology, and music like Twombly used, the words Bradford chooses are from popular culture, such as from Frank Oceans new album “Blond”, Chance the Rapper’s album “Coloring Books”, Bob Dylan’s “John Wesley Harding”, and from writer Samuel Beckett, from current news, social media, and from moments and words that he finds significant. Bradford’s paintings juxtapose the seductiveness of popular culture with the unpredictability of nature. The red orbs are an analogy for the chaotic destruction that exists within the blessing of life. These paintings are about the human experience. They are about the dialectic in every moment we experience. There is perversity in the beautiful. Bradford Butler currently works in Los Angeles.

In Van Elder’ work, fairy tales, old masters painting, girlhood memories, domestic elements and teen culture are collaged together to create a intimate yet oddly theatrical (often dark) one page narrative.
Tweenies- heroines are comically involved in games, chores, little rituals and rites of passage, role-playing or simply awkwardly stand there in all their self-aware angst, absorbing life ambiguities.
